Maker Lesson Plan 1: Design a Solution

  • Explain to students that for this year’s Global Codeathon their job is to save the earth.  As coders they have the power that they can actually start to do that.  Show this video of students who designed a solution to wasting light energy.

  • Show the students the equipment you have available and what it can do (if you have sensors and motors explain how they work)
  • Identify some problems that the earth has (air pollution, fighting etc)
    • Brainstorm possible coding solutions to those problems.
      • A gamified recycling can that keeps your score.
      • A game that teaches empathy through role play
      • A water pollution detector
  • Brainstorm ideas as a group so students can piggyback off one another's ideas.

  • Depending on the students’ project they can either create a prototype of a solution such as the energy saving bathroom light sample or they can work on a full-sized project.  They can also have a solution that is robotic or is purely on Scratch.
  • At the end of the session have the students share the solutions they came up with.
  • If possible, take a quick video clip and post to Twitter using #globalcodeathon.
